How to Get a Thick Lawn That Comes Back Every Year

Start by assessing the current condition of your lawn. Do you have existing grass? Are there a lot of broadleaf weeds? Does crabgrass appear in the same spots every year?

We like to begin with controlling the crabgrass. Crabgrass grows quickly and can outcompete your lawn during the summer. Since we grow cool-season grasses, and crabgrass is a warm-season grass, the crabgrass thrives in full sun while the cool-season turf becomes stressed and grows more slowly.

We apply two rounds of crabgrass pre-emergent to effectively stop crabgrass from germinating. This helps maintain strong lawn coverage throughout the summer months.

Next, we use scheduled treatments tailored to the weather to keep the cool-season turf healthy and thriving all season long.

For the spots where crabgrass consistently returns β€” usually along edges where pavement meets lawn β€” it’s important to overseed with quality seed. The goal is to establish strong, healthy grass that fills in these vulnerable areas. After all, the best weed prevention is a thick, healthy lawn.

Once the seed is established, we apply lime and a winterizer fertilizer. This helps prevent moss buildup over the winter and supports the development of strong, healthy roots. When spring arrives, your lawn wakes up with a tough, resilient barrier of grass, ready for another season β€” combined with crabgrass pre-emergent to keep weeds in check.
